Who am I?

The name is Hoda Akl. I am a person who can go down a philosophical rabbit hole trying to answer the question above, for what really is the self? For all practical purposes, I will refrain from indulging in such an endeavor and attempt a more or less traditional introduction by answering another question.

What do I do?

I am a Machine Learning Scientist at Generate: Biomedicines. My days are consumed by coding and reading papers about protein design and developing Machine Learning models to make proteins that do the things we want them to do inside the body. I love my work, and I love my team. Generate has quite an academic environment. We are looking for curious and driven people to join us.

I got my Physics Ph.D student at University of Florida. I worked in Dixit group doing computational and theoretical biophysics on understanding protein sequence variation and cellular heterogeneity. I had a great experience in our lab. It is an environment where students get the support they need to make progress academically, while sharpening their intellectual blades by giving and receiving constructive criticism.

Outside of my academic pursuits, I am interested in sharing knowledge and insights I have come across through different forms. Especially reading. I’ve recently started a Newsletter as a medium for sharing. I also have a YouTube channel where I share experiences and thoughts I believe are valuable.
